JUDGES' NOTES

FAVORITES

  • Seal Beach Toffee Company: straight-out classic buttery flavor that's rich, balanced and not too sweet.
  • Toffee Merchant Royal Dutch Chocolate: quality cocoa and chocolate and butter, all balanced and supporting each other to create a lasting and deliciously haunting flavor.
  • Toffee Merchant Bourbon Pecan English: smooth buttery bourbony flavors.
  • The Traditional English Toffee from Ticket was a standout for flavor and texture
  • Toffee Merchant’s Coconut Pecan English Toffee
  • Seal Beach. Fantastic texture.
  • I had many favorites: TicketChocolate Classic Handcrafted English Toffee, Brown's Milk Chocolate Toffee, and Kate's -- all outstanding, classic, crunnch toffees. A favorite flavored toffee was Cratan's Cardamom, Coriander and Orange toffee, which was so delicious and would follow an Indian or Thai meal wonderfully. I also really liked the crunchy coconutty-ness of of The Toffee Merchant's Coconut Pecan English Toffee. Too many favorites, I know, but these were all great!
  • Toffee Merchant Coconut Pecan
  • Too hard to decide. I'm a Toffee lover, and I appreciated all the variations.
  • CRAFIAN Artisanal Toffee Cardamom, Coriander & Orange tied with Ticket Chocolate Classic
    Seal Beach Ron's Original
  • My personal toffee favorites include: The Toffee Merchant Bourbon Pecan English Toffee, Coconut Pecan and Royal Dutch Chocolate; Tania's Toffee Coconut Lime and Rose des Sables; CRAFIAN Artisanal Toffee Cardamom, Coriander & Orange; and Brown's English Toffee Dark Chocolate Coated Almond-Free English Toffee
  • KB Churro and Crafian Artisanal were neck and neck
  • Toffee Merchant Royal Dutch Chocolate Toffee .

QUOTABLE COMMENTS FROM JUDGES

  • Tania's Toffee: I loved the infusion of lime, and was hoping for a much stronger taste to offset the sweetness. Please, a lot more lime and less sweet white coating.
  • Crafian Coriander: loved the supporting flavors to the toffee, would prefer less sweet coating so the flavors can shine.
My favorites were the toffees that balanced flavor, texture, appearance and quality ingredients.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the unique ingredient combination toffees this year.
  • CRAFIAN’s distinctly flavored entry was excellent.
  • Tania's Toffee Rose des Sables used corn flakes to give it a fun texture.
  • Mom Yvonne’s Cookies & Cream Crunch Toffee was the first cookies & cream food item I actually liked.
  • The Toffee Merchant's confections combine the best texture with the most balanced flavors.
The quality of ingredients really shines throught in all my top-rated selections. To my taste, it makes such a difference to just use great butters, sugars, cream and fresh nuts (etc.) and to avoid additives.
  • Toffee Merchant's flavors and chocolate came together to make great and unique toffee.
  • Seal Beach is a traditional full bodied toffee. Yum.
  • Producers like Crafian with unique and pronounced flavor combinations are propelling the category and bound to appeal to a broader range of palates.
  • Crafted Sweet soft toffees had a unique soft crumb texture that almost made it cake-like; great for those who can't bite the hard toffees.
  • Brown's English Toffee Dark Chocolate Coated Almond-Free toffee was a delight as the toffee and chocolate really shined without the distraction of nuts.
  • CRAFIAN Artisanal Toffee Cardamom, Coriander & Orange was a delightful blend of warm spices and citrus.
  • The Toffee Merchant's English Toffee all hit the mark with flavor and texture; I especially liked the Bourbon Pecan and Royal Dutch Chocolate combinations.
  • MomYvonne's Candy Co Cookies & Cream toffee was a delight and bring back childhood memories.
  • The Crafian was soft and smooth and melted in my mouth. I wanted more!
  • KB Raspberry had a fruit forward flavor.
  • Tania's Lime and coconut were a balanced pair of flavors.
  • Tania's Rose des Sables captured my imagination
  • The Seal Beach Toffee was quite satisfying and visually beautiful
  • The Toffee Merchant: High compliments for such creative and luxurious flavor options: Bulleit bourbon adds a romantic lilt to the richness of nutty toffee, and Italian pizzelle are delicately crunchy -- I've never seen them included in candy before! ...
  • And to Tania's Toffee: At first I thought cornflakes might not meld well with creamy toffee, but they proved a perfect inclusion -- with just the right amount of crunch. ...
  • Crafted Sweet: A soft texture is a fantastic adventure; despite toffee's traditional crunchiness, the velvety richness of your Coconut Pecan in particular creates a long-lasting flavor-texture paradise!

INDIVIDUAL JUDGES' RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CHOCOLATIERS

  • The Rose Des Sables from Tania's Toffees was very nice, but a little too sweet for my palette.
  • I found the toffees made with natural ingredients tasted better. And a light hand with the sugar and salt helped too. Those were the toffees I thought were truly artisan toffees — I could taste the quality and I rated them higher.
  • Do not overpower the toffee with too much flavoring or make the toffee so sticky that it does not dissolve but sticks in your teeth.
  • To KB Candies: Your Raspberry Toffee is such a great idea, but to my taste, the citric acid finish overpowers the delicate raspberry taste from your freeze-dried raspberry powder.
  • Try to make them without Hydrogenated oils
  • What great flavors and variety. Hard to choose..so many favorites!
  • There was less flavor diversity this year i.e. no coffee or expresso flavors but overall very high quality from producers who use wholesome ingredients.
  • Kate's Single Batch had amazing packaging
  • Tania's Toffee Coconut Lime was a flavor combination I wanted to love, but it needed more lime flavoring.
  • Kate's: a more explanatory label would be helpful -- giving each variety a clever name and displaying it clearly on the label to attract more attention.
  • Ticket and Seal Beach: With no window in the packaging to see the product inside, it's hard for customers to judge what they're getting.
  • Producers who use hydrogenated palm oil will not get high marks from me. These ingredients detract from the quality and particularly in texture and flavor of your products.
